Marlins Sweep UMW in Weekday Doubleheader

Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington fell to nationally ranked Virginia Wesleyan 10-1, and 8-1 on Thursday. UMW falls to 7-6 overall for the year.

The Eagles fell behind early in game one, as VWC scored on two hits in the opening inning. Mary Washington tied the game up in their half of the first. Bireet Chitty walked, followed by a Brittany Scites single to right moved Chitty to second. Olivia Tatara came up next and smacked a single to right, allowing Chitty to cross home.

That was all the Eagles would get, as the Marlins scored four in the third, one in the fourth, and four again in the fifth to win in five innings. Scites led the Eagles going 3-3 in the opener with three singles.

Game two saw much of the same, as Virginia Wesleyan got three in the first off of Hannah Otterman. Marlin pitcher Kristina Karagiorgis held the Eagles without a hit until Tatara broke through with a single in the fourth. VWC got one run in the third and fifth innings, then another three in the top of the seventh to take an 8-0 lead. UMW broke through in the bottom of the seventh with a run off a Chitty single to score Lindsey Aylor.

Otterman went seven innings in the loss, giving up six earned runs and striking out four.

UMW returns to the diamond this weekend with CAC doubleheaders at York (Sunday, 12:00 p.m.) and Penn State-Harrisburg (Monday, 12:00 p.m.)
