Eagles Sweep CAC Twinbill with Wesley on Saturday

Dover, Del.-- The University of Mary Washington softball team defeated Wesley 5-2 in the first game, and 10-8 in eight innings in the nightcap. UMW moves to 7-4, 2-0 CAC on the year.

Neither team could plate a run until the Eagles broke through in the top half of the fifth in game one. Stefannie Asselanis reached on an error, and would later score on a Brittany Scites triple. Scites would score on the very next at bat thanks to an Olivia Tatara fielder's choice to lead 2-0.

Hannah Williams got up the next inning and reached on a fielder's choice. Asselanis would single the next at bat, setting up runners on first and third for Bireet Chitty. Chitty would smack a single to plate both Williams and Asselanis.

Wesley would get two in the bottom of the sixth, but UMW added one run in their half of the seventh to seal the victory. Hannah Otterman went seven innings to record her sixth win of the year.

In the nightcap, Wesley put up a seven spot in their half of the second, to race ahead 7-0. UMW chipped back, getting a run in the top of the third on a Brittnee Haynes sac fly and again in the fourth on a Taylor Bass double.

The Eagles would tie the game in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded, Wesley threw a pass ball, allowing Grace Henry to score. A wild pitch in the same at bat scored Chitty, and the Eagles only trailed 7-4. Asselanis hit into a fielder's choice, allowing Scites to cross home to cut the deficit to two. Hannah Williams came up and tied the game on a double, scoring Asselanis and Tenney.

UMW got the go ahead runs in the top of the eighth, with a Haynes double to score Chitty and Lindsey Aylor; followed by a Brianna D'Agata double to score Haynes. Wesley got one in their half of the eighth, but the Eagles came all the way back to win in extras, 10-8.

Rachel Watts came on to pitch 6.1 innings, only giving up two runs and fanning six.

The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, March 25th, when they host a double dip with Shenandoah beginning at 3:00 p.m.
