Eagles Split Double Dip With Lynchburg on Saturday

Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington softball team split with the Hornets on Saturday to move to 5-4 on the year. The Eagles took game one, 5-4 in walkoff fashion, before falling 4-2 in the nightcap.

Game one saw the Hornets get off to a fast start, with their lead off hitter smacking a triple, and scoring on an error to lead 1-0. UMW answered back in the bottom of the second. Brittany Scites singled to lead off the inning, and was moved over on a Brittnee Haynes sac bunt. Later in the inning, Hannah Williams doubled to left to bring in Scites.

The Eagles took the lead in the fourth, with again Scites getting on base of a single. Scites then stole two bases, allowing Williams to knock her home on an RBI groundout. UMW added to their lead in the sixth, with Scites scoring her third run of the game on an RBI single by Hannah Otterman.

Lynchburg would take the lead off a Danielle Powell three run home run to left center in the top of the seventh. Kate Chisholm got hit by a pitch to start the seventh. Bireet Chitty then singled, advancing Chisholm to third. Erica Falvey came up and hit a single to score Kate, and then an error by the Hornets allowed Chitty to score all the way from first to win 5-4.

Game two saw the Hornets again get out ahead early, thanks in part to an Eagle error, then added to their lead in the third. Lynchburg got two more on an RBI single.

The Eagles cut into the deficit in the bottom half of the inning, with a Bireet Chitty RBI single, scoring Stefannie Asselanis. The Eagles got another run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Hornet lead to just one. Grace Henry doubled in Scites, to make the deficit 3-2. But Lynchburg got a run in the top half of the seventh to seal the win at 4-2.

UMW returns to action March 19th, as they travel to Catholic for a double header starting at 3:00 p.m.
