Eagles Softball Splits With Randolph-Macon, Moves to 4-3 on the Year

Ashland, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington softball squad won the opener, 6-3, before falling 8-0 in the nightcap. Hannah Otterman pitched a complete game one to earn her fourth win of the year, while the Yellow Jackets found the bats in game two en route to the 8-0 win.

The Eagles got the scoring started early in game one. Otterman reached on an error, which allowed Brittany Scites to cross the plate for the first run of the game. Emily Briggs then singled to plate Brittnee Haynes. With the bases loaded, Kate Chisholm got hit by a pitch to allow Otterman to cross to give UMW a 3-0 lead.

UMW added to their lead the very next inning, with Otterman again plating Scites, this time with a double to left. Briggs then came up and reached on a fielders choice, allowing Haynes to score again, giving UMW a 5-0 lead.

Macon would get one back in the bottom of the third, but once again Briggs answered in the fifth with an RBI single, scoring Alex Tenney to seal the victory.

Otterman pitched all seven innings, allowing 11 hits but only giving up three runs. Briggs had three RBI's, while Otterman helped her own cause with two.

Game two was a complete 180, as Randolph-Macon came out swinging early. The Eagles only mustered two hits all game, as the Yellow Jacket pitcher Best shut down the Eagles.

UMW returns to action on Saturday, March 15th. The Eagles host Lynchburg with a double dip beginning at 1:00 p.m.
