Eagles Split With McDaniel in Sunday Doubleheader

Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington softball team split their doubleheader with the Green Terror. UMW won game one 2-1, before falling 10-1 in game two. The Eagles are now 3-2 on the year.

Game one saw a pitchers duel between Hannah Otterman and McDaniel's Caroline Brehm. The Green Terror struck first, scoring on a Lauren Stricker home run in the top of the second. UMW would answer back in their half of the fifth. Bireet Chitty smacked a double to center, and advanced to third on a throwing error with only one out. Brittany Scites then singled her in the next at bat to tie the game.

McDaniel threatened in the top of the seventh, getting the bases loaded before Chitty tagged out the runner going to third to end the inning. Olivia Tatara got all the way to second to open the bottom half of the inning. Otterman then hit a sac fly to advance Tatara to third. Tatara was tagged out at the plate the next at bat by Alex Tenney. With Tenney on first Brittnee Haynes pinch hit her home on a Green Terror error to win the ballgame.

Otterman pitched a complete game, only giving up one run while striking out seven.

Game two was a complete 180, as McDaniel found their bats. UMW got ahead early with a Hannah Williams RBI single to give the Eagles the lead after two. But McDaniel answered right back, scoring in the top on the third, then six more times in the fourth. The Green Terror added three in the seventh to seal the victory.

The Eagles return to action on Monday, with a double dip against Randolph-Macon. The twinbill starts at 2:30 p.m. in Ashland, Va.
