UMW Softball Falls to Frostburg, 8-5, in CAC Tournament Semifinal

The University of Mary Washington softball team saw its season come to an end with an 8-5 loss to Frostburg State University on Saturday in Salisbury, Md. UMW closes with a 15-23 overall mark.

After Frostburg opened scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first, the Eagles answered with two in the top of the second inning. The Eagles strung together four singles, with Kerry Busby and Alex Tenney reaching before Emily Nykorchuk and Emily Briggs hit RBI singles.

The Bobcats plated single runs in the third and fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead before Briggs singled to lead off the fifth and moved to second on an error. Bireet Chitty reached on another error - one of four the Bobcats committed in the game - and both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch before Briggs scored on a fielder's choice.

The Bobcats scored a matching run in the bottom of the fifth to move the score to 6-3, but UMW rallied for two in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-5. Tenney led off with a single and advanced to second on an error, and to third on a wild pitch. Nykorchuk followed with an RBI single.Hannah Williams singled and advanced on an error, with pinch runner Lindsay Aylor scoring on the play.

Frostburg scored twice in the sixth as well to cap the scoring. Tenney went 3-4 to lead the Eagle offense, while Nykorchuk went 2-3 with two RBI, and Briggs went 2-2 with a run scored and an RBI.

Sophomore Hannah Otterman took the loss for the Eagles, allowing five runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings, with three walks and two strikeouts. Senior Annie Blaine allowed three runs on four hits in 2.2 innings with three walks and two strikeouts.
