The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a 5-4 decision to Frostburg State University, but rebounded to eliminate York College, 8-0, in six innings, at the Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Friday in Salisbury, Md. The Eagles move to 15-22 on the year, and will face Frostburg again on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Eagles fell behind, 3-0, in the first inning, but answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Bireet Chitty singled and stole second, and trotted home on Kerry Busby's two-run homer.
UMW tied the score in the second on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Williams, but FSU scored runs in the sixth and seventh and held on in the bottom of the seventh for the 5-4 win.
Chitty and Brittany Scites each had two hits for UMW, while Busby added the two-run homer. Hannah Otterman took the loss, allowing two earned runs on eight hits, with two walks and six strikeouts.
UMW responded with an 8-0 win over York to eliminate the Spartans. The Eagles scored once in the second on a Stefannie Asselanis RBI double, and added two in the third, as Busby had an RBI single, Alex Tenney added an RBI double, and Emily Briggs produced a two-run single.
Asselanis homered to left in the fifth, and Tenney capped the game with a two-run double in the sixth. Senior Annie Blaine picked up a huge shutout for the Eagles, allowing just two hits in six innings, with one walk and one strikeouts.
The Eagles will face Frostburg on Saturday at 10 a.m. in an elimination game, and the winner advancing to the championhip round.
