UMW Softball Drops Pair at #20 Salisbury in CAC Action

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped both ends of a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at Salisbury University on Saturday. UMW fell in the opener, 7-1, and 9-0 in the nightcap.

In the opener, the eagles scratched out seven hits, but could only push across one run. Salisbury scored three in the first, but the Eagles closed the gap to 3-1 in the fourth, as Stefannie Asselanis provided an RBI single to plate Emily Nykorchuk with two outs in the frame.

Salisbury scored four times in the sixth for the 7-1 win. Senior center fielder Brandee Adams led the Eagles with three hits, and Alex Tenney singled and wlaked for UMW. Hannah Otterman took the loss, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Salisbury scored three in the first, four in the second, and two in the third en route to a 9-0 win. The Eagles had one hit, with Emily Nykorchuk providing a single.

Senior Annie Blaine took the loss in game two, allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits in three innings. Freshman Ashton Ferneyhough pitched one scoreless inning of relief for UMW.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host Catholic University for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
