UMW Softball Splits Saturday CAC Twinbill With Frostburg State

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Saturday Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader with Frostburg State University, falling in the opener, 2-0, but winning the nightcap, 6-4.

In the opener, both pitchers threw well, and Frostburg made the most of two solo home runs in a 2-0 victory. The Bobcats had five hits in the game, while the Eagles had two hits, with Brandee Adams and Brittany Scites each had hits.

Hannah Otterman pitched well in defeat, allowing two earned runs on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

In game two, the Eagles scored two in the first on an RBI double by Scites and an RBI single from Emily Briggs. In the third, the Eagles upped the lead to 5-0 with three runs. Scites was again the catalyst with a two-run triple, and scored on a wild pitch.

After the Bobcats cut the deficit to 5-3 in the sixth, Hannah Williams hit a solo homer to extend the lead back to 6-3. The Babcats scored once in the seventh to cut the final margin to 6-4.

Scites led the Eagles with a double, triple, two runs scored and three RBI. Bireet Chitty had two hits for UMW. Otterman scattered 10 hits in seven innings, allowing two earned runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Christopher Newport University at 3:00 p.m.
