The nationally ranked Lynchburg College softball team swept a pair of games on Saturday from the University of Mary Washington in Lynchburg, 1-0 and 4-3. The Eagles fall to 8-11 on the season.

In the opener, the Hornets scored one time in the first inning, and held on for a 1-0 victory. Following a pair of singles and a bunt, LC scored the only run on an RBI groundout.

Bireet Chitty singled and walked to lead UMW, while Brittany Scites and Emily Nykorchuk each had hits for the Eagles as well. Sophomore Hannah Otterman took the loss, allowing one earned run on five hits in six innings, with two walks and two strikeouts.

In the second game, Lynchburg built a 3-0 lead, only to see the Eagles score three runs in the sixth to tie the score, before scoring in the seventh for the win.

Trailing 3-0 after single runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings, the Eagles answered with three in the sixth. After Chitty reached on an error and moved to third on a groundout, Scites reached on an error to plate Chitty. Nykorchuk was hit by a pitch, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. After a pitching change, Emily Briggs provided an two-run double to score both runners and tie the score.

A bases-loaded walk with two outs scored the game-winning unearned run for the Hornets. Briggs led the Eagles at the plate with two doubles, while Chitty and Hannah Williams singled for UMW. Otterman took the loss for UMW, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings, with three walks and three strikeouts.

UMW will return to action on Thursday when they visit Virginia Wesleyan College at 3:00 p.m. for a doubleheader.
