UMW Softball Drops Pair in Myrtle Beach

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a pair of games in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Monday to kick off their annual Spring Break trip. UMW fell to Lycoming, 7-2, and Mount St. Mary, 7-5.

In the Lycoming game, UMW fell behind, 6-0, after five innings, but rallied for two in the sixth. Brittany Scites led off the inning with a single, and moved to second on a pinch hit single from Sarah Pierson. After a sacrifice bunt, Scites scored on an Emily Briggs groundout. Hannah Williams followed with an RBI single to plate Pierson.

After Lycoming scored on a passed ball in the top of the seventh, UMW put two runners on base, but neither were able to score in the 7-2 final.

Williams led the Eagles with two hits and an RBI, while Brandee Adams added a pair of hits. Hannah Otterman took the loss in relief of Ashton Ferneyhough, allowing six runs in four innings after Ferneyhough scattered three hits and one unearned run in three innings.

In the Mount St. Mary game, UMW again fell behind, 6-0, after four innings, but battled back, scoring two in the fifth. Bireet Chitty walked and went to third on an Alex Tenney double. With two outs, Adams knocked in both runners with a single to centerfield.

After Mount St. Mary's advanced the lead to 7-2 in the seventh, UMW rallied again in the bottom of the inning. Kerry Busby doubled and went to third on a single from Chitty. Tenney followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Busby. Adams scored Chitty with a single, and then scored herself on a hit from Scites. With three runs, UMW closed the final gap to 7-5.

Scites led the Eagles with three hits, while Adams added two hits and three RBI. Chitty was 2-2 with two runs scored. Annie Blaine took the loss for UMW, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings, with three walks and six strikeouts.

The Eagles will continue in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday.
