UMW Softball Sweeps Hood in CAC Opener

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a doubleheader from Hood College at the Battleground in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday by scores of 14-1 in five innings and 5-0 in a lightning-shortened six inning game. The Eagles improve to 12-10 overall, and 2-0 in league play.

The Eagles broke out offensively from the start in game one, scoring seven runs in the first inning, and followed with three runs in the second, three in the third, and one in the fourth. Junior Brandee Adams had a single and two doubles to lead the Eagle offense, while senior Morgan Lamon added two singles and a double. Kerry Busby, Hannah Williams, and Amanda Adams each had two hits for UMW.

Freshman Hannah Otterman went the distance for the Eagles, scattering seven hits in five innings, with two walks and two strikeouts with one earned run.

In the nightcap, the Eagles plated three runs in the first and two more in the fifth in a game that was halted due to lightning in the sixth inning and the Eagles winning, 5-0. Lamon singled and tripled, Busby singled and doubled, and Brianna D'Agata added a pair of singles and a walk offensively. Junior Annie Blaine gained the win, allowing four hits in 4.2 innings, with one walk and two strikeouts. Danielle Cunetta got the save with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

On the day, freshman Brittany Scites had two triples, a single, and five RBI.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Thursday when they host Christopher Newport University at 3:00 p.m.
