UMW Softball Drops Doubleheader to Va. Wesleyan

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a Tuesday doubleheader to Virginia Wesleyan College at the Battleground, dropping the opener, 12-4, and the nightcap, 5-3, in six innings. UMW falls to 2-6 on the year.

In the opener, the Eagles led, 4-3, into the sixth inning, but the Marlins scored seven times in the sixth and twice more in the seventh for the 12-4 win. Sophomore Brianna D'Agata had two hits and two RBI to lead the Eagle attack, while junior Annie Blaine took the loss, allowing four unearned runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 5.2 innings.

In game two, the Eagles allowed a first inning run, but scored twice to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame. Morgan Lamon and Kerry Busby each had two hits to lead UMW, while freshman Hannah Otterman allowed five earned runs on 11 hits in six innings, with one walk and five strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they visit Mary Baldwin College for a doubleheader at 11:00 a.m.
