UMW Softball Drops Twinbill to Shenandoah

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a pair of games to Shenandoah University on Sunday at the Battleground. Scores were 3-0 and 7-4.

In the opener, the Hornets scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to break open a scoreless tie en route to a 3-0 win. UMW had five hits, with Bireet Chitty providing a hit and two walks. Danielle Cunetta took the loss in relief after Julianne Sweat pitched three scoreless innings.

In the nightcap, the Hornets scored twice in the top of the first, only to see the Eagles answer with two in the bottom of the frame. Annie Blaine's two-run double was the big hit of the inning. Shenandoah answered with two more in the second inning, and three in the fifth. UMW scored twice in the sixth to cut the final deficit to 7-4.

Senior Morgan Lamon led UMW with two hits, with Blaine and Kerry Busby adding UMW's only other two hits. The Eagles did reach base six times via the walk, and one batter was hit by a pitch. Blaine took the loss, allowing four earned runs in four innings, with two walks and one strikeout.

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they host Virginia Wesleyan College at 2:30 p.m.
