UMW Softball Tops Hood, 10-2, in CAC Tourney 1st Round


The University of Mary Washington softball team erupted for 10 runs in the opening three innings in defeating Hood College, 10-2, on Wednesday at the Battleground in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The Eagles improve to 18-19 on the year, and will host a second round game on Friday at 4:00.

On Wednesday, the Eagles kicked off the first inning with four runs, and added three each in the seocnd and third. Bireet Chitty walked to lead off the first for UMW, and was sacrificed to second by Brandee Adams. Morgan Lamon followed with an RBI single. Kerry Busby singled Lamon to third, and Amanda Adams knocked in a run with a double to center field. Brianna D'Agata follwed with a two-run double, and the Eagles were on their way.

In the second, Busby doubled home Brandee Adams and Lamon, and scored herself on a single from Amanda Adams. In the third, Alyssa Hara singled and scored on an error. After Bireet Chitty singled Michelle Durnavich to third and stole second, Lamon provided a two-run double to plate both runners.

Junior Nicole Black was the winner for the Eagles, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings, with one walk and six strikeouts.

The Eagles will host a second round game on Friday, as today's York/Frostburg first round game was postponed until tomorrow. Game time against the yet to be determined opponent is 4:00 p.m.
