UMW Softball Splits Doubleheader with York

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Saturday doubleheader with York College of Pa, winning the first game 2-1 in nine innings before falling in the nightcap, 7-0. UMW improves to 9-3 in Capital Athletic Conference play, and will be the second seed in next week's CAC Tournament.

In the opener, after seven scoreless innings, the Eagles prevailed in nine, 2-1. After each team scored in the eighth, the Eagles held the Spartans at bay in the ninth, before Morgan Lamon (Herndon, Va., Oakton) moved to third on a sacrifice by Amanda Adams (Ashburn, Va., Stone Bridge), and scored on a long fly ball to center field by Brianna D'Agata (Hanover, Pa., Southwestern).

Lamon and Adams each had two hits for the Eagles to lead the way at the plate. Junior Nicole Black (Stafford, Va., North Stafford) pitched 4.2 innings of relief with no earned runs allowed and five strikeouts.

In game two, the Eagles had just four hits, with Kerry Busby (Kennet, Pa., Kennett) gaining three of the four tallies. York scored once in the fourth, two in the fifth, and four in the sixth for the win.

The Eagles will host a CAC Tournament first round game on Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
