GAME ONE   |  GAME TWO

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader from Stevenson University, 3-0 and 3-1, on Tuesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 16-18 on the season, and 8-2 in CAC action.

In the opener, UMW used two early runs to jump ahead, and saw solid pitching from freshman Julianne Sweat (Chesterfield, Va., Cosby) and junior Nicole Black (Stafford, Va., North Stafford) in gaining a 3-0 victory. In the first, Bireet Chitty (Stafford, Va., Brooke Point) led off with a triple and scored on a Morgan Lamon (Herndon, Va., Oakton) fielder's choice.

The Eagles upped the lead to 2-0 in the second when Alyssa Hara (Stafford, Va., North Stafford) led off with a single and later scored on a Chitty RBI single. The Eagles added a run in the sixth when Katherine Preseren (Roanoke, Va., Hidden Valley) singled and scored all the way from first as Hara's single was misplayed in the outfield.

Chitty went 3-4 and Hara added two hits to lead the Eagles at the plate, while Sweat allowed four hits in 3.1 innings, and Black gained the win with no runs on two hits in 3.2 innings of relief.

In game two, the Eagles again jumped ahead early, as Kerry Busby (Kennet, Pa., Kennett) hit a two-run homer in the first, and the Eagles never looked back in a 3-1 win. Junior Danielle Cunetta (Lake Ronokonkoma, N.Y., Sachem) allowed no earned runs on five hits in the win, striking out six.

Mary Washington will look to clinch at least second place in the CAC standings with a home doubleheader against York College on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
