UMW Softball Sweeps Pair at Wesley

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a doubleheader at Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 12-2 and the nightcap 12-1. UMW improves to 10-14 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

In the opener, UMW scored nine times in the sixth inning to break open a 3-2 game. Kerry Busby (Kennet, Pa., Kennett) and Morgan Lamon (Herndon, Va., Oakton) each ahd three hits for the Eagles, each adding a double. Nicole Black (Stafford, Va., North Stafford), Amanda Adams (Ashburn, Va., Stone Bridge), and Kathryn Lohr (Fairfax, Va., Robinson) each had two hits for UMW. Black allowed three hits and two runs in six innings, with two walks and nine strikeouts in gaining the win.

In game two, the Eagles scored in every inning but one in a 12-1 win. Bireet Chitty (Stafford, Va., Brooke Point), Busby, and Brianna D'Agata (Hanover, Pa., Southwestern) each had two hits for UMW, with D'Agata adding three runs scored. Danielle Cunetta (Lake Ronokonkoma, N.Y., Sachem) allowed no earned runs on two hits in picking up the win, with 11 strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they visit Shenandoah University at 3:30 p.m.
