UMW Softball Splits Pair With Bridgewater

UMW Softball Splits Pair With Bridgewater
GAME ONE   |   GAME TWO

Junior first baseman Morgan Lamon (Herndon, Va., Oakton) went 4-4 with three RBI and a home run to lead the University of Mary Washington softball team to a 5-4, extra inning win over Bridgewater College in the opener of their Thursday afternoon doubleheader at the Battleground. The Eagles fell, 3-0, in the second game to move their record to 8-14 on the season.

Lamon singled her first two times at bat, and then hit what appeared to be a home run to the opposite field off the foul pole, but was initially called a ball in play off the wall and a triple. But after the umpires convened, the call was correctly changed to a home run.

Bridgewater tied the score at 4-4, but in the bottom of the eighth, Lamon singled courtesy runner Katherine Preseren (Roanoke, Va., Hidden Valley) to third, and Nicole Black (Stafford, Va., North Stafford) helped her own cause with a liner to the outfield fence to plate the winning run. Black, who started the game and re-entered in the seventh inning, allowed just one hit in 3.2 innings in gaining the victory. Preseren added a pair of hits for UMW.

In the second game, the Eagles fell behind quickly, 3-0, and neither team could plate a late run as the sun set on the day's proceedings. The Eagles stranded six runners and posted four hits, with Amanda Adams (Ashburn, Va., Stone Bridge), Preseren, Danielle Cunetta (Lake Ronokonkoma, N.Y., Sachem), and Koah Chitty (Stafford, Va., Brooke Point) providing the offense. Black took the loss for UMW, allowing six hits and three runs in three innings.

Mary Washington will visit Wesley College for a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
