UMW Softball Sweeps Pair from Mary Baldwin

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a doubleheader from Mary Baldwin College on Saturday, winning the opener 17-0 before taking the nightcap, 5-0. The Eagles improve to 7-13 on the season.

In the opener, UMW jumped ahead early with five runs in the first, and never looked back. Catcher Kerry Busby (Kennet, Pa., Kennett) led the Eagles at the plate with a single, double, and home run, while pitcher Danielle Cunetta (Lake Ronokonkoma, N.Y., Sachem) added three hits and two RBI. Bireet Chitty (Stafford, Va., Brooke Point) was 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, and Morgan Lamon (Herndon, Va., Oakton) singled, doubled, scored twice and drove in two runs.

Cunetta took the win, allowing one hit in five innings with seven strikeouts and no walks.

The second game saw the Eagles score one run in the first and widen the margin with a four-run fifth to break open a tight game. Bireet Chitty had two hits and scored twice, while Amanda Adams (Ashburn, Va., Stone Bridge) had a pair of RBI to lead the way for the Eagles.

Nicole Black (Stafford, Va., North Stafford) earned the win for the Eagles with four innings of one-hit relief, with no walks and five strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Thursday when they host Bridgewater College at 3:00 p.m.
