UMW Softball Drops Opening Twinbill to Messiah

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped its 2011 debut on Saturday to visiting Messiah College, falling 11-4 and 11-0 to the Falcons.

In the opener, the Eagles were led by third baseman Elizabeth Crowe (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac), who went 2-3 with a pair of RBI. Sophomore Annie Blaine (Arlington, Va., Yorktown) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out three. Blaine was the victim of seven UMW errors in the contest.

Game two saw the Falcons erupt for 12 hits and 11 runs, while the Eagles had just two hits, from Crowe and first baseman Morgan Lamon (Herndon, Va., Oakton). Danielle Cunetta (Lake Ronokonkoma, N.Y., Sachem) took the loss for the Eagles, allowing nine runs on nine hits in three innings, with three walks and one strikeout.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Randolph-Macon College for a doubleheader at 2:30 p.m.
