Crowe's Slam Leads UMW Softball to 6-2 Win at Hood in CAC Tourney 1st Round


Sophomore Elizabeth Crowe (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) hit a seventh-inning grand slam to over come a 2-1 deficit and lead the University of Mary Washington softball team to a 6-2 victory at Hood College in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament in Frederick, Md. on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles advance to face second seeded York College on Thursday in the tournament.

Trailing 2-0 in the sixth, Amanda Adams (Ashburn, Va., Stone Bridge) provided an RBI single to center to put the Eagles on the board. In the seventh, Kim Olinger (Bealeton, Va., Liberty) led off with a walk and m,oved to second on a single from Krissy Leber (Mechanicsville, Va., Atlee). Brandee Adams (Waverly, Va., Tidewater Academy) followed with a single to load the bases. Olinger scored the tying run on a bases-loaded walk to Katherine Preseren (Roanoke, Va., Hidden Valley), and Crowe followed with a grand slam to center, her eighth home run of the season.

Crowe and Brandee Adams combined for four of UMW's six hits, while sophomore Danielle Cunetta (Lake Ronokonkoma, N.Y., Sachem) earned the win pitching for UMW, allowing one run in 5.2 innings of one-hit relief.

The Eagles will visit York on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in the second round of the tournament. York defeated Stevenson, 5-3, in their first round contest.
