UMW Softball Splits CAC Twinbill With Stevenson

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Thursday Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at Stevenson University, winning the opener 6-1 before falling in the second game, 1-0.

The Eagle offense rapped out 12 hits in taking game one by a score of 6-1. Sophomore Elizabeth Crowe (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) and freshman Kerry Busby (Kennet, Pa., Kennett) each led UMW with three hits, while Kaitlin Petrella (Leesburg, Va., Heritage) singled and doubled. Busby and Brandee Adams (Waverly, Va., Tidewater Academy) each drove in a pair of runs for the Eagles.

The Eagles trailed 1-0 after one inning, but scored once in the second, twice in the third, and three in the sixth. Freshman Annie Blaine (Arlington, Va., Yorktown) allowed six hits and one earned run in seven innings, walking none and striking out one.

In the second game, UMW allowed just a second inning run in a 1-0 loss. Freshman Brandee Adams led UMW with two singles. Sophomore Danielle Cunetta (Lake Ronokonkoma, N.Y., Sachem) was the tough luck loser, allowing just one earned run in six innings on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

The Eagles will host Wesley College for a CAC doubleheader on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
