UMW Softball Splits CAC Doubleheader at York

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped the opener of its Saturday twinbill at York College, 4-0, but responded by winning, 2-0, in the second game. UMW is now 3-1 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The opener saw the Eagles nearly get no hit, but senior Kaitlin Petrella (Leesburg, Va., Heritage) broke up the bid with a two-out single in the seventh. Freshman Annie Blaine (Arlington, Va., Yorktown) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in 5.2 innings, with three walks and three strikeouts.

The second game saw Mary Washington score once in the fourth and once in the fifth for a 2-0 victory. Sophomore Elizabeth Crowe (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) had two of UMW's four hits in the game, scoring once and driving in two with a single and home run, her sixth of the year.

DanDanielle Cunetta (Lake Ronokonkoma, N.Y., Sachem) picked up the win for the Eagles, scattering five hits and no runs in seven innings, with no walks and three strikeouts.

Mary Washington will visit Bridgewater College on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
