UMW Softball Takes Twinbill From Mary Baldwin

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a doubleheader from Mary Baldwin College on Sunday afternoon, winning their third and fourth straight games. UMW improves to 4-8 overall, after winning game one, 16-1, and taking the nightcap, 19-0.

In the opener, the Eagles rapped out 16 runs on 15 hits, including home runs by Amanda Adams (Ashburn, Va., Stone Bridge) and Elizabeth Crowe (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac), in a 16-1 victory. The Eagles plated nine runs in the fourth inning. Adams went 4-4 with four RBI to lead the Eagles, while Koah Chitty (Stafford, Va., Brooke Point) added three hits. Crowe, Kaitlin Petrella (Leesburg, Va., Heritage), Kerry Busby (Kennet, Pa., Kennett), and Kim Olinger (Bealeton, Va., Liberty) each added two hits for UMW.

Crowe allowed four hits and one earned run in five innings in picking up the win. She walked none and struck out seven batters.

In the nightcap, the Eagles scored six runs in the first and nine in the second en route to a 19-0 win. Petrella and Danielle Cunetta (Lake Ronokonkoma, N.Y., Sachem) each had three hits to lead UMW, while Crowe went 2-2 with a home run and four RBI. Morgan Lamon (Herndon, Va., Oakton), Adams, and Katie Sterling (Arlington, Va., Yorktown) each had two hits for the Eagles, with Adams adding three runs scored.

Freshman Annie Blaine (Arlington, Va., Yorktown) allowed just one hit in five innings in gaining the win, with two walks and six strikeouts.

Mary Washington will visit Catholic University for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
