UMW Men's Tennis Competes at Navy's Joe Hunt Invitational

The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team competed against Division I competition at the U.S. Naval Academy's Joe Hunt Invitational this weekend in Annapolis, Md.

On day one, Mary Washington struggled as senior Moses Hutchinson and junior Andrew Watson lost to doubles teams from Delaware and George Mason. Artis Hart and Peter Leese also lost doubles matches to Delaware and George Mason as did Cole Tecce and Priyan DeSilva. The highlight of day one was Rishi Charan Shankar and Nick Spera winning both matches against Delaware and George Mason. In singles, all of the Eagles fell to strong Delaware players.

On day two, the Eagles stepped up their game. Hutchinson posted a win over George Mason number one and lost in a super breaker to St. Joe's number one. Watson had to retire against George Mason, and Charan Shankar defeated George Mason's number three and St Joe's number three. Spera defeated George Mason and Saint Joe's, and Tecce lost against George Mason in a super breaker but defeated Saint Joe's. Hart lost to St Joe's and then defeated George Mason. Leese defeated a Navy player and then fell to George Mason. Andrew Cooper defeated FDU and then fell to George Mason. In doubles, Charan Shankar and Spera continued their winning ways with a win over Saint Joe's. Watson and Hutchison dropped a match to Fairleigh Dickinson, Leese/Hart fell against St Joe's, and Tecce/Desilva lost against Navy.

On Sunday, Tecce gained a win against St. Bonaventure, and Hart a win over Navy. Both Charan Shankar and Spera and Hutchison and Watson gained wins over the University of Richmond, and Hutchison gained a straight sets win over Navy in his flight.
