BRIDGEWATER FRESHMAN CANON SECORD NAMED VAISD STATE COLLEGE DIVISION PLAYER AND ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, UMW'S HELBLING GAINS COACH OF THE YEAR AS 2019 VASID MEN'S TENNIS COLLEGE DIVISION TEAM ANNOUNCED
Fredericksburg, Va. – Bridgewater College freshman Canon Secord was named as the State College Division Player and Rookie of the Year, and Mary Washington head coach Todd Helbling gained State Coach of the Year as the 2019 Virginia Sports Information Directors announced the College Division Men's Tennis teams on Tuesday.
Secord sweeps both player honors after gaining 2019 ODAC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. He ranked No. 21 in Atlantic South Region singles rankings, and finished with a 15-2 record at No. 1 singles. He claimed all-ODAC first team at No. 1 singles and All-ODAC second team at No. 1 doubles.
Helbling claimed State Coach of the Year honors after leading Mary Washington to the CAC Championship and NCAA Tournament third round with a program-record 23 victories. The Eagles finished 23-5 on the season, going undefeated against college division opponents as well as against conference foes, finishing the season ranked 15th in the nation.
First team honors in singles went to Secord, Patrick Hughes and Moses Hutchison of Mary Washington, Dominic Lacombe and Ryan Macy of Christopher Newport, and Bobby Neuner of Washington and Lee. First team doubles included Daniel Blonquist and Kukutla Motlojoa ofSouthern Virginia, Matt Miles and Moses Hutchison of Mary Washington, and Bobby Neuner and Mitchell Thomas of Washington and Lee.
Second team honors went to Ryland Byrd, Derek Hagino, and Matt Miles of Mary Washington, Paul Gladstone and Timothy Tep of Virginia Wesleyan, and Harry Shepherd of Washington and Lee in singles. Second team doubles honors went to Matthew Moody and Michael Moody of Hampden-Sydney,
Patrick Hughes and Michael Fleming of Mary Washington, and Harry Shepherd and Noah Tapp of Washington and Lee.
VaSID all-state teams are nominated by and voted on by the Virginia Sports Information Directors membership.
