#19 UMW Men's Tennis Tops #11 Pomona Pitzer Late Friday Night

The 19th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team jumped ahead in doubles, fell behind, and came back at the end to defeat 11th ranked Pomona Pitzer College on Friday night in Pomona, Cal., for their first victory over the Sagehens since 2009. The Eagles improve to 5-3 on the season, and close their trip with a second straight 5-4 thrilling victory.

In doubles play, Pomona gained a point at three, winning 8-6, after the Eagles took the first point, with Ryland Byrd and Derek Hagino winning at two, 8-5. UMW gained the second doubles point at one, as Moses Hutchison and Matt Miles won, 8-7 (5).

When the action turned to singles, the Sagehens quickly picked up a pair of points by winning at one and two. After a win at four, Pomona was on the verge of victory, but the Eagles won all three of the last matches on to gain the team win. Cole Tecce was down 5-3 in the first set but scored four straight points to take the first, and then trailed 3-0 in the second and stormed back for a 7-5 win in the second.

Hagino was at 5-5 in the third set, down 0-40, but came back to win that point and win in a tiebreaker to claim a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 wn at five. After splitting sets, 7-6 and 4-6, Hughes trailed 0-40 in the last game at three, but rallied back to win 7-5 and avoid a third set breaker to clinch the match.

The Eagles will return to action next Saturday when they host Washington & Lee University at 2:00 p.m.
