#20 UMW Men's Tennis Romps #36 Stevens, Slips to #14 Kenyon on Saturday

The 20th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated 36th ranked Stevens Institute, 8-1, and dropped a thrilling five hour match to 14th ranked Kenyon College, 5-4, on Saturday at the UMW Indoor Tennis Center. The Eagles move to 2-1 on the season.

In the Stevens match, the Eagles jumped ahead by sweeping all three doubles matches. Moses Hutchison and Matt Miles won at one, 8-1, and Ryland Byrd and Derek Hagino won at two, 8-1, while Michael Fleming and Patrick Hughes won at three, 8-0.

In singles action, Fleming won at two, 6-4, 7-5; Hutchison won at three, 6-4, 6-3; Hagino won at four, 6-2, 6-4; Byrd won at five, 6-4, 6-0, and Priyan Desilva won at six, 6-3, 6-3.

In the Kenyon match, the Eagles picked up a 2-1 lead in doubles, as Hutchison and Miles won at one, 8-5, and Fleming and Hughes won at three, 8-2. After Kenyon claimed the first three singles matches to take a 4-2 lead, Cole Tecce won at five, 6-0, 6-4, and then Hutchison won at four, 5-7, 6-4, 5-3 (ret.). In the last match on, Byrd dropped the first set but bounced back to come from behind in the second to win a tiebreaker before falling in the third, 6-3.

The Eagles will continue hosting nationally-ranked opponents on Sunday as they host Sewanee at 8 a.m.
