The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team saw four singles players and four doubles teams advance to day two of the ITA South/Southeast Regional Tournament on Friday at the Battleground.
In doubles action, Joseph Brown and Michael Fleming gained a first round bye and then topped Joshua Pinckney and Kunal Barde of Carnegie Mellon, 8-5. Ryland Byrd and Derek Hagino topped Evan Han and James Hahn of Swarthmore, 8-2, to advance. Patrick Hughes and Cole Tecce topped Noah Criss and Noah Cheng of Swarthmore before edging Vishnu Joshi and Scott Thygesen of Johns Hopkins, 8-7 (4). Matt Miles and Moses Hutchison defeated John Rudden and Noah Tapp of Washington & Lee, 8-3, to advance to Saturday's round of 16.
In singles play, Michael Fleming downed Paul Gladstone of Virginia Wesleyan, 6-2, 6-2, before topping Thibault Vernier of Swarthmore, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. Patrick Hughes beat Lucas Bueno of Muhlenberg, 6-3, 6-3, and Samuel Gibson of Carnegie Mellon, 6-3, 6-4, and Matt Miles defeated Frankie Fortunati of Catholic, 6-0, 6-1, and Clark Safran of Carnegie Mellon, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. Derek Hagino advanced by beating Ian Siew of Salisbury, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, and Andy Mason of Christopher Newport, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Saturday's action will start with two rounds of doubles, followed by singles play.
