FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Washington & Lee University sophomore HARRY SHEPHERD (Ridgewood, N.J.) was selected as the Player of the Year as the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association announced the 2018 College Division All-State Teams on Monday. University of Mary Washington freshman COLE TECCE (Medford, N.J.) was selected as the Rookie of the Year, and UMW head coach Todd Helbling gained Coach of the Year honors.
Shepherd posted a 14-4 singles record while playing No. 1 for the Generals. He also recorded a 13-6 doubles mark while playing No. 1 doubles. The 2018 ODAC Player of the Year, Shepherd qualified for the NCAA Singles Championship, falling in the first round. He ranked fifth in the ITA Atlantic South Region in singles.
Tecce gained Rookie of the Year honors after gaining All-Capital Athletic honors for the Eagles at six singles with a 22-6 record, including numerous clinching points in singles in team victories as the last match on.
Helbling led Mary Washington to a 20-6 record, winning the CAC Championship for the 18th time in 19 years, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round. Helbling gains state coach of the year honors for the seventh time since 2006, and first time since 2015.
Seven different schools were represented on the all-state teams. Mary Washington led with six selections, including four on the first team. Juniors Matt Miles and Patrick Hughes were selected to the first team for singles, and Hughes and Derek Hagino and Michael Fleming and Ryland Byrd were chosen to the first team in doubles. The Eagles saw Joseph Brown selected to the second team in singles and Miles and Moses Hutchison named to the second team for doubles.
Hampden-Sydney had five members chosen to the team, including Matthew Moody in singles and Matthew and Michael Moody in doubles on the first team. Grayson Burns and Chris Cummings were selected to the second team in both singles and doubles.
Christopher Newport University gained four selections as seniors David Reed and Justin Cerny were named to the first team in singles and the second team in doubles, where they were joined by teammates William Trang and Andy Mason.
Lynchburg's Juan Borga, Southern Virginia's Paul Monson, and Bridgewater's Josh Rodgers rounded out the second team selections for singles.
