FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Mary Washington junior Matt Miles repeated as Player of the Year to headline the 2018 All-CAC Men's Tennis team. UMW head coach Todd Helbling was chosen as Coach of the Year for the 13th time, while Salisbury freshman Stefan Hein picked up the other major award as Rookie of the Year.
Miles, who played No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles for the Eagles this spring, becomes the seventh player in CAC history to receive Player of the Year honors multiple times. He is the fifth Eagle to accomplish the feat, joining Tyler Carey (2013-15), John James (2007 & 2009), Conor Smith (2001-03) and Tim Martin (1998 & 2000) in that elite club. Miles posted a 14-15 overall singles record this season, including a 4-0 mark in CAC play. In doubles, he compiled a 23-8 mark, mostly at the No. 2 position. In addition to his Player of the Year honor, he was a first-team All-CAC singles selection for the third straight year and was a first-team All-CAC doubles pick for the second year in a row.
Hein becomes the eighth Sea Gull to claim CAC Rookie of the Year accolades. Playing at No. 3 singles for much of the season, Hein pieced together a 17-3 overall singles mark, including a 4-2 record in CAC play. He was selected to the All-CAC singles second team for his efforts.
Helbling was chosen by his peers as the CAC Coach of the Year for the conference-record 13th time in his career in Fredericksburg. Helbling led the Eagles to a 20-6 record in 2017-18, their 23rd CAC title, and a trip to the NCAA second round.
UMW received all-conference recognition at all six singles spots and all three doubles positions to lead the 2018 All-CAC team. Joining Miles on the All-CAC singles first team were junior Patrick Hughes and sophomore Joseph Brown, who played at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots for the Eagles, respectively. Hughes is now a three-time first-team pick, while Brown earned All-CAC recognition for the first time. Second team singles honorees for UMW included sophomore Michael Fleming (No. 4), junior Ryland Byrd (No. 5), and freshman Cole Tecce (No. 6). Fleming, the 2017 CAC Rookie of the Year, collects back-to-back all-conference honors after landing on the first team last spring.
Fleming and Byrd, the No. 1 doubles duo for UMW, also picked up first-team doubles awards, as did Miles and freshman Moses Hutchison from the No. 2 position. Fleming, Byrd and Miles were all repeat first-team doubles selections. The tandem of Hughes and junior Derek Hagino rounded out UMW's all-conference honorees on the All-CAC doubles second team.
Christopher Newport secured two spots on both the singles and doubles teams, with seniors David Reed and Justin Cerny landing on both squads. A first-team All-CAC singles pick as the Captains' No. 2 player, Cerny received all-conference singles accolades for the fourth straight season. Reed, the Captains No. 1 singles player and the 2015 CAC Rookie of the Year, was a repeat first-team singles pick. The senior duo also nabbed first-team doubles honors for the second straight season for their third career All-CAC doubles nod.
The CNU tandem of junior William Trang and sophomore Andy Mason collected All-CAC second team doubles honors for the second year in a row. Trang was also a doubles second-teamer in 2016, earning his third-straight spot on the doubles second team for the Captains.
Salisbury nabbed two All-CAC singles spots and one doubles team on the all-conference squad. Sophomore No. 2 singles player Ian Siew was named to the first team along with Hein earning second-team accolades at the No. 3 singles position. Siew was a second-team singles pick in 2017. In doubles, the Sea Gulls were represented by Siew and sophomore Colt Williamson on the second team from the No. 1 doubles position.
Southern Virginia received two second-team All-CAC singles honorees - freshman No. 1 Paul Monson and sophomore No. 2 Ben Spencer.
