#16 UMW Men’s Tennis Defeats #20 Bates College, York (Pa.) College on Saturday

The sixteenth-ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated Bates College and York (Pa.) College on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. UMW defeated Bates College 5-4, and York (Pa.) … The Eagles improve to 10-2 overall, and 1-0 in the conference.

In the match against Bates, UMW held a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Ryland Byrd and Michael Fleming won at one doubles 9-8 (7-5); Moses Hutchison and Matt Miles won 8-1 at two doubles. Bates won at three doubles 8-6.

In singles action, Joseph Brown won at three singles 6-4, 6-3; Fleming won at four singles 6-3, 7-6 (7-0); and Cole Tecce won at six singles 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. The Eagles fell at one singles 6-1, 6-0; at two singles 6-4, 6-0; and at five singles 6-2, 6-1.

UMW gained control of the second match as they jumped ahead 3-0 in doubles action. Byrd and Fleming won at one doubles 8-2; Hagino and Hughes won at two doubles 8-2; Hutchison and Ryan Berry won at three doubles 8-4.

The Eagles dominated in singles action as they only lost one match. Hughes won at one singles 6-1, 6-2; Brown won at two singles 6-3, 6-0; Hutchison won at three singles 6-0, 6-0; Hagino won at four singles 6-0, 6-0; and Berry won at five singles 6-1, 6-1. The Spartans won at six singles 6-1, 6-0.

UMW will be back in action on Sunday as they take on Penn St.-Harrisburg at 9 a.m. and then CNU at 2:30 p.m. in a CAC clash.
