Hagino, Hughes Named CAC Men's Tennis Players of the Week

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Mary Washington doubles duo of Derek Hagino and Patrick Hughes collected CAC Men's Tennis Co-Player of the Week honors for Oct. 3, 2017.

Mary Washington juniors Derek Hagino and Patrick Hughes were honored as the CAC Co-Players of the Week after capturing the doubles title in the championship draw of the ITA Southeast Regional at UMW. The pair entered the tournament unseeded, survived the play-in round and cruised all the way to the regional title. Hagino and Hughes posted wins of 8-6, 8-5 and 8-5 to advance to the semifinals, where they defeated teammates Matt Miles and Michael Fleming 8-6. In the championship, they downed Chaz Downing and Daniel Levine of Carnegie Mellon, 6-4, 6-3, to claim the crown. They will advance to the ITA Oracle Cup in Rome, Ga., on October 11.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Several CAC teams traveled to Fredericksburg, Va. to compete at the annual ITA Southeast Regional Championship hosted by Mary Washington last weekend ... Christopher Newport senior David Reed reached the semifinals of the ITA Southeast Regional Championship, posting a 4-1 record to become the first CNU player since 2010 to reach the semifinals ... Salisbury senior Kelson Weber and doubles partner Stefan Hein won the B1 Doubles Championship. The duo won four matches, including an 8-5 win in the championship match against Hampden-Sydney's Clark Cummings and William Driskill ... Southern Virginia freshman Paul Monson was 6-0 last week in doubles and singles, helping the Knights maintain their perfect record. Monson went 3-0 at No. 1 singles, and 3-0 at No. 2 doubles ... York junior Sam Innerst led the Spartans to a pair of non-conference wins for the week as the Spartans finished the fall season strong with a four-match win streak after starting the fall 0-3. Innerst began the week with a 6-2, 6-2 second singles win over Albright's Noah Jessie. He followed that with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Catholic's Frankie Fortunati in second singles on Saturday. Innerst teamed with senior Devin Lehigh to produce an 8-0 first doubles win in the Albright match while the duo earned an 8-3 victory in the match against Catholic. For the fall, Innerst was 5-2 at second singles while he combined with Lehigh to produce three doubles wins during the fall.
