Fredericksburg, Va. – University of Mary Washington sophomore Matt Miles (Harrison, N.Y.) was named the State College Division Player of the Year, Christopher Newport head coach Eric Christiansen claimed State Coach of the Year, and Hampden-Sydney College freshman Matthew Moody (Raleigh, N.C.) gained state Rookie of the Year as the 2017 Virginia Sports Information Directors announced the College Division Men's Tennis teams on Friday.
Miles, the 2017 Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year, moved to number one singles midway through the season, leading the Eagles to a 17-8 overall record. He claimed first team All-CAC honors in both singles and doubles. Miles gains Player of the Year honors one season after collecting State Rookie of the Year honors in 2016.
Christiansen gained VaSID Coach of the Year honors after collecting CAC Coach of the Year honors after the Captains won their first CAC title in April, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time. CNU defeated Franciscan in the opening round of play.
Moody gained Rookie of the Year honors after finishing the year with a 13-5 overall record and becoming one of three ODAC players ranked regionally. He also finished the year with a 16-2 mark in doubles.
Washington and Lee University had four singles picks, as well as one doubles team. Mary Washington had two doubles teams and three singles competitors on the all-state teams, while Christopher Newport had one doubles team and three singles players named.
