Matt Miles Named CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year; Michael Fleming Named CAC Rookie of the Year

YORK, Pa. - Mary Washington's Matt Miles and Michael Fleming secured major player awards while Christopher Newport's Eric Christiansen earned top coaching honors to highlight the 2017 All-CAC Men's Tennis Team.

Miles, a sophomore, became the 10th player in UMW history to be named Player of the Year. After playing a variety of positions in the singles lineup to open the year, Miles worked his way up to No. 1 singles and played No. 2 doubles for most of the season. In addition to being Player of the Year, he was also a first-team selection in both singles and doubles. Miles was the 2016 CAC Rookie of the Year and a repeat all-star in both singles and doubles.

Fleming, a freshman, was named Rookie of the Year. He is the 12th UMW player to receive the award as the conference's top newcomer. Fleming was also an All-CAC first-team selection at No. 3 singles and a first-team pick at No. 1 doubles.

Christiansen earned CAC Coach of the Year honors for the first time after guiding the Captains to their first-ever CAC championship. The Captains defeated Mary Washington 5-3 in the title match, snapping the Eagles' 17-year run atop the conference.

CAC champion CNU picked up the most All-CAC awards with five players earning singles recognition and all three doubles teams on the all-star team. Juniors David Reed and Justin Cerny were selected to the first team in singles and as a doubles pair. Reed, the 2015 Rookie of the Year and No. 1 singles player for the Captains, earned All-CAC singles recognition for the first time. Cerny, CNU's No. 2 singles player, became a three-time singles all-star after also earning second team honors in 2016 and first team honors in 2015. As a doubles team, the duo secured repeat all-star status after landing on the second team last spring.

The Captains placed three players on the All-CAC singles second team and a pair of doubles teams on the second team as well. Freshman Andy Mason (No. 3 singles, No. 2 doubles), freshman Dominic Lacombe (No. 4 singles), sophomore Nick Ruzicka (No. 6 singles), sophomore William Trang (No. 2 doubles), and seniors Michael Dodd (No. 3 doubles) and Arttu Fiva (No. 3 doubles) claimed All-CAC second team accolades. Trang was a repeat second-team doubles pick, while Fiva earned his third consecutive all-star nod on the doubles second team.

In addition to major awards captured by Miles and Fleming, Mary Washington was well-represented on the all-star squad with four singles honorees and two doubles teams. Joining Miles and Fleming on the All-CAC singles first team was sophomore Patrick Hughes (No. 2), who was also a first-team pick in 2016. Derek Hagino (No. 5) was the lone Eagle on the singles second team. That makes back-to-back All-CAC recognition for the sophomore, who was a first-teamer last spring.

In doubles, Hagino and Miles (No. 2 doubles) were first-team selections, as were Fleming and freshman Ryland Byrd (No. 1 doubles) for the Eagles.

Salisbury freshman Colt Williamson was a first-team singles selection for the Sea Gulls and also earned second team doubles along with fellow freshman Patrick MacLean. Williamson and MacLean played at the No. 1 doubles spot for the Sea Gulls. Another SU freshman, Ian Siew, was named a second-team singles all-star at the No. 2 position.

St. Mary's was represented on the All-CAC squad by freshman No. 1 singles player Jonathan Gorel, who earned second team accolades.
