#17 UMW Men's Tennis Falls in CAC Championship to Christopher Newport, 5-3, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team dropped a 5-3 decision to visiting Christopher Newport University in the 2017 Capital Athletic Conference championship on Saturday evening. The Eagles fall to 17-7 on the season.

The Captains edged ahead in doubles play, as David Reed and Justin Cerny won at one, 8-3, and Michael Dodd and Artuu Fiva won at three, 8-6. The Eagles gained a point at two, as Derek Hagino and Matt Miles won by an 8-6 count.

The Captains extended their lead in singles to 3-1, as Nicholas Ruzicka won at six, 6-0, 7-5. UMW came back to score a point at one, with Miles winning, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Cerny won at two, 6-4, 6-4, but the Eagles scored another as Hagino won at five, 7-6, 6-3.

With two matches remaining, CNU scored the clinching point at four, as Dominic Lacombe won in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

The Eagles will now await an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament after visiting Johns Hopkins University on Monday. Match time is set for 4:00 p.m.
