#16 UMW Men's Tennis Tops So. Virginia, TCNJ on Saturday as Helbling Wins 300th at UMW

The 16th ranked University of Mary Washingotn men's tennis team won a pair of matches at the Battleground on Saturday, topping Southern Virginia University, 7-2, and The College of New Jersey, 8-1, as UMW head coach Todd Helbling won his 300th match as mentor of the Eagles.

In the Southern Virginia match, the Eagles won all three doubles matches to get started. Ryland Byrd and Michael Fleming won at one, 8-2, and Ryan Berry and Max Fritsch won at two, 8-2. Patrick Hughes and Matt Miles were victorious at three, 8-1, giving the Eagles the upper hand heading to singles.

The Eagles gained singles wins from Fritsch at three, 6-2, 6-3, Fleming at four, 6-4, 6-2, Hughes at five, 6-2, 6-0, and Byrd at six, 6-0, 6-0.

UMW came back to face The College of New Jersey in the afternoon, and topped the Lions, 8-1. Byrd and Fleming won at one doubles, 8-4, and Hagino and Miles won at two, 8-6. Hughes and Brown rounded out the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win at three.

In singles, Miles won at one, 7-5, 7-6, and Hughes won at two, 6-7, 7-5, 10-7. Brown won at four, 6-2, 6-2, Hagino won at five, 6-4, 7-5, and Byrd won at six, 6-2, 6-2.

The Eagles will be back in action with two more matches at home on Sunday, against Frostburg State at 10 am and Swarthmore College at 1 pm.
