After falling behind, 2-1, after doubles play, the 21st ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team roared back to defeat 28th ranked Christopher Newport University, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon in Newport News. The Eagles improve to 9-4 overall, and 9-2 against Division III opponents.
CNU picked up wins at one and two doubles, but Joseph Brown and Patrick Hughes gained a big point at three, winning 8-4.
In singles, CNU gained a point at one, but UMW responded with wins from Matt Miles at two, 6-1, 6-4, over Justin Cerny, Patrick Hughes at three, 6-2, 6-3, over Andy Mason, and from Michael Fleming at four, 6-3, 6-3, over Dominic Lacombe.
With two matches left, UMW's Derek Hagino overcame a 6-1 loss in the first set to top Nicholas Ruzicka, 7-5, 6-1, in the second and third, to clinch the Eagle victory.
Mary Washington will return home on Sunday to face Franklin & Marshall College in their third match in as many days. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
