The 21st ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated Cal Lutheran University and Cal Tech on Sunday in Thousand Oaks, California. The Eagles topped Cal Lu, 7-2, before downing Cal Tech, 8-1.
The Eagles jumped ahead after doubles against Cal Lutheran, winning at two, with Derek Hagino and Matt Miles winning, 8-6, and at three with Joseph Brown and Patrick Hughes winning by an 8-4 score.
In singles, the Eagles gained wins from Miles at two, 6-3, 6-2; Hughes at three, 6-4, 6-1; Brown at four, 6-0, 6-4; Byrd at five, 6-3, 7-6; and Hagino at six, 6-1, 6-2.
In the win over Cal Tech, the Eagles swept all three doubles matches, with Brandon Griffin and Byrd winning at one, 8-5, Hagino and Miles at two, 8-3; and Brown and Hughes at three, 8-3.
In singles, Miles won at two, 6-2, 7-5, Hughes won at three, 1-6, 6-0, 6-1; Brown won at four, 6-2, 6-4, Byrd won at five, 6-4, 6-3, and Hagino won at six, 7-6, 0-6, 6-4.
The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday against Pomona Pitzer College.
