UMW Men's Tennis Competes at ITA South/Southeast Regional

The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team competed at the ITA South/Southeast regional Championships this weekend.

Senior Brandon Griffin and sophomore Matt Miles each advanced to the quarterfinals of the championship flight. Griffin opened with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Zack Ely, and defeated Simon Bernier in the second round, 6-3, 6-3. He then topped ninth seeded David Perez, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the round of 16 before falling, 6-4, 6-4, to fifth seeded Michael Rozenvasser. Miles defeated Ari Cepelewicz, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round, and fifth seeded David Reed, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 32, and then topped Matthew Sklar, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 16. He fell to top seed Michael Buxbaum, 6-1, 6-2, in the quarters.

Other Eagles picking up wins in the main draw were Michael Fleming over Jonathan Gorel in the first round, 6-2, 6-2; Patrick Hughes over Kenneth Downing, 6-1, 6-2; and Derek Hagino over Michael Moody, 6-1, 6-2. Fleming won his second round match over Kevin Xu, 7-5, 6-3.

In doubles play, Ryan Berry and Max Fritsch won their round of 32 match, 8-4, as did Griffin and Miles, 8-4. Both fell in tight matches in the round of 16.

The championships will conclude at UMW on Monday with semifinals and finals action.
