UMW Men's Tennis Opens 16-17 Campaign at Navy Invitational

The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team competed against all Division I competition at the Navy Invitational in Annpolis, Md., with some quality results.

In the one singles flight, UMW senior Brandon Griffin defeated Thomas Pecor of Navy, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (5), and Walker Sims of Navy, 6-1, 6-1. In the two singles bracket, Patrick Hughes defeated Aries Wong of Navy, 7-5, 6-1, in the first round, Alejandro Estrada 6-2, ret., in the consols, and then Arjuk Ramikrishnan of Mount St. Mary's, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in the fifth place match.

Matt Miles won in the third flight, 6-1, 7-6 (4) over Brice Polender of Richmond in placing sixth. Derek Hagino won the consolation final in four singles, topping Vireet Naran of Towson, 6-4, 7-6, Josh Martin of Navy, 6-2, 6-4, and Giuliano Buzoianu of George Mason, 6-3, 6-3.

Joseph Brown won his first rouynd match against Colin Wong, 6-4, 6-0, and in the consols against Klein Evans of Richmond, 6-2, 6-4, in placing sixth.

Nolan Perugini advanced to the finals of five singles bracket, defeating Sam Oberholzer of Delaware, 6-4, 6-0, Cam Kirkpatrick of Navy, 6-3, 6-3, Steven Hollander of Navy, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, and Jon Qunard of Navy, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Michael Fleming won against Ben Gerber, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Hollander, 6-1, 6-4. Ryland Byrd downed Joe Cooke of Navy, 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles, Griffin and Miles topped a duo from Navy, 6-2, and won again, 7-5, in the consols. Hughes and Byrd advanced to the consols final with a pair of wins. Fleming and Brown won their first round match in B doubles over Navy, and Hagino and Perugini won the C flight in doubles, winning over three teams, winning 6-3 in the final.

The Eagles will return to action next weekend as they serve host for the ITA regional championships.
