#26 UMW Men's Tennis Tops #27 Christopher Newport, 5-2, for 2016 CAC Championship

The 26th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated #27 Christopher Newport University, 5-2, in the championship match of the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 18-9, and capture their 17th consecutive conference crown.

The Eagles and Captains split the first two doubles matches, as UMW's Patrick Hughes and David Lunding-Johansson won at three, 8-1, and CNU's Justin Cerny and David Reed won at two, 8-2. In the decisive doubles match, UMW jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but CNU battled back to go ahead after doubles with a 9-8 win at one, with Chiraag Shetty and Stephen Boslet gaining the win.

In singles, UMW sophomore Eric Hurwitz won at three, 6-1, 6-4, over Boslet, and Hughes won at five over Arttu Fiva, 6-0, 6-2, to give UMW a 3-2 lead. Griffin beat David Reed at one, 6-3, 6-4 to push the team lead to 4-2, and Matt Miles won at four over Shetty, 7-6 (7), 6-2, for the clinching point.  

The Eagles gain their 17th straight CAC Championship, and 22nd overall. The Eagles will advance to the NCAA Championships, which begin on May 13.
