#16 UMW Men's Tennis Splits with Whittier, Division I UC Riverside

The 16th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team split a pair of matches in Southern California on Sunday, defeating Whittier College, 8-1, before falling to Division I UC Riverside, 6-1, to move to 7-1 on the season.

Against Whittier, the Eagles picked up doubles wins at two and three, with Eric Hurwitz and Patrick Hughes winning, 8-2, at two, and Alex Cragg and David Lunding-Johansson winning, 8-3, at three.

In singles, the Eagles swept all six matches, four of which in straight sets. Stratton Gilmore won at one, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, and Lunding-Johansson won at two, 6-1, 7-5. Brandon Griffin won at three, 6-2, 7-5, and Hurwitz won at four, 7-5, 4-6, 10-3. Hughes won at five, 6-1, 7-5, and Matt Miles won at six, 6-0, 6-1.

The Eagles then faced their fourth Division I opponent of the Spring in UC Riverside, falling 6-1. The Eagles dropped doubles matches at one and three, 7-5, and also fell at two to drop the doubles point.

Lunding-Johansson, playing at one singles, picked up UMW's lone point with a three-set win in a super breaker.

The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they face Pomona-Pitzer College at 4 p.m. local time.
