#16 UMW Men's Tennis Tops Division One Loyola, 8-1, to Improve to 3-0

The 16th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team toppled its third straight NCAA Division I opponent in Loyola (Md.) University, 8-1, on Sunday at the UMW Indoor Tennis Center. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the year.

Mary Washington started strongly, taking all three doubles matches to gain a 3-0 advantage. Sophomores Nolan Perugini and Eric Hurwitz played well at two, gaining an 8-2 victory. At one, Stratton Gilmore and Brandon Griffin won, 8-5, and Alex Cragg and Patrick Hughes were victorious at three, 8-5.

The Eagles won at the top five singles matches. At one, Gilmore won, 6-4, 3-0 (ret.); and Brandon Griffin won at two, taking the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-2. Hurwitz took an easy 6-0, 6-1 win at three, and Hughes won at four, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Freshman Matt Miles won his match at five with a tiebreaker win in the second set, 7-1.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 20, when they host Washington College at 9:00 a.m. and Stevens Institute at 3:00 p.m.
