#16 UMW Men's Tennis Tops Division I Longwood and George Mason to Open Spring Season

The 16th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team opened the spring season with a 5-2 victory over Longwood University and a 7-0 sweep over George Mason University on Saturday at the UMW Indoor Tennis Center. The Eagles start the year 2-0.

In the Longwood match, the Eagles fell behind after doubles despite fighting tough. UMW fell at one doubles, 9-7, and two doubles, 8-6, before winning at three, as David Lunding-Johansson and Alex Cragg were victorious, 9-7.

The Eagles then stormed back to win five of six singles matches, as senior Stratton Gilmore won at one, 6-3, 6-1; Lunding-Johansson won at three, 6-2, 6-1; Derek Hagino won at four, 7-6, 6-3; Patrick Hughes won at five, 6-1, 6-3; and Matt Miles won at six, 6-4, 6-1.

In the nightcap against George Mason, UMW picked up the doubles point after taking wins at one and three. Gilmore and Brandon Griffin were victorious at one, 8-4, and Cragg and Lunding-Johansson won at three, 8-6, giving UMW a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

The Eagles survived several three set matches to sweep the singles play. Gilmore won at one, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4; Lunding-Johansson finished his 4-0 day with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 win; Griffin won at three, 7-6, 6-3; Eric Hurwitz took a 7-6, 7-6 win at four; Hughes won in three, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, at five; and Matt Miles won at six, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

UMW will be back in action on February 14 when they host Loyola University at 2:00 p.m.
