Tyler Carey Wins Through to Quarterfinals of NCAA Singles Tournament; Doubles Upended in Three Sets in First Round

University of Mary Washington senior Tyler Carey won his first two rounds of matches at the NCAA Division III singles championship on Thursday, and will play in quarterfinals on Friday. He and Evan Charles fell in the national doubles championship.

Carey defeated Mohanad Al-Houni of Gustavus Adolphus College, 6-0, 6-1, in first round action. Carey was never threatened, winning the first set without allowing a point, and then jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the second before taking a 6-1 triumph.

He then took on Ari Smolyar of Middlebury College, the third seed, in the second round, and after falling in a first set tiebreaker, 7-6, bounced back with 6-3 and 6-4 wins in the last two sets for the thrilling win.

Carey will face Skylar Butts of Claremont Mudd Scripps on Friday at 10:00 a.m. in the quarterfinals.

Carey and Evan Charles then squared off against Nicolas Cummins and Patrick Lipscomb of Redlands in the doubles tournament, and fell in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
