UMW Men's Tennis Fares Well at Kickoff Classic in Season Opener

The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team opened the 2014-15 season by hosting the annual UMW Kickoff Classic this weekend. The Eagles won nine doubles matches on Saturday, and won 17 of 21 singles matches on Sunday.

In doubles action, Andrew Curtis and Brandon Griffin defeated Johnson and Markman of Washington & Lee, 8-4, and Pereira and Ugade of NC Wesleyan, 8-4. Junior David Lunding-Johansson and Eric Hurwitz defeated Bannister and Frank of W&L, 8-2, Lowenthal and Dodd of CNU, 8-6, and Krasner and Siami of W&L, 8-3. Freshman Nolan Perugini and Alex Cragg went 3-0 in doubles, defeating NC Wesleyan, 9-8 (1), NC Wesleyan, 8-6, and CNU, 8-3.

In singles, Tyler Carey defeated Jimmy Lange of George Mason, 6-0, 7-5, and David Reed of CNU, 6-2, 6-3. Stratton Gilmore beat Michael Holt of W&L, 6-4, 6-4. Lunding-Johansson beat Justin Cerny of CNU, 6-4, 6-0. Brandon Griffin beat Chiraag Shetty of CNU, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Evan Charles downed Fabio Pereira of NC Wesleyan, 6-7 (11), 6-4, 6-3, and Fernando Nardelli of NC Wesleyan, 6-4, 7-5.

Scott Buie defeated Michael Dodd of CNU, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (8) and Amir Alkhafaji of George Mason, 6-1, 6-0. Andrew Curtis beat Joseph Siami of Washington & Lee, 6-1, 6-3, and Phillip Vylegzhanian of NC Wesleyan, 6-3, 7-6 (8). Perugini defeated Grayson Lowenthal of CNU, 6-1, 6-3, and David Chan of NC Wesleyan, 6-1, 6-2. Alex Cragg beat Eduardo Ugalde of NC Wesleyan, 6-3, 6-0, and Max Katcher of CNU, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Joe Dillenbeck beat Carlos Ponte of NC Wesleyan.

The Eagles will return to action next weekend when they play at George Mason University.
