Tyler Carey Named VaSID College Division Player of the Year, Helbling Named Coach of the Year as All-State Teams Announced

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – University of Mary Washington junior Tyler Carey (Moseley, Va.) has been named State College Division Player of the Year, UMW head coach Todd Helbling repeated as State Coach of the Year, and Virginia Wesleyan College freshman Kenney Downing (Washington, D.C.) gained state Rookie of the Year as the 2014 Virginia Sports Information Directors announced the College Division Men's Tennis teams on Friday.

Carey led Mary Washington to the third round of the NCAA Tournament with a 21-6 record, as the junior gained Player of the Year honors with a 17-12 overall mark at number one singles and a 19-11 mark at one doubles with Evan Charles, primarily against nationally-ranked opponents. Carey was named CAC Player of the Year for the second straight year, and was a first team selection in singles and doubles, and individually advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both singles and doubles.

Helbling repeated as State Coach of the Year after leading UMW to a 21-6 record and advancing to the NCAA Tournament third round. The Eagles gained the CAC Championship for the 14th straight year, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 14th straight time, all under Helbling's tutelage.

Downing gains Rookie of the Year after winning the 2014 ODAC Rookie of the Year. He was a first team All-ODAC pick at No. 2 singles and 2nd team at No. 1 doubles, posting a 14-3 record in singles, including 9-1 in ODAC competition. He enjoyed a 10-match winning streak in singles during the season and teamed with Graham Wilson for a 14-5 record at No. 1 doubles (9-3 in ODAC play) He helped guide VWC to the runner-up finish in ODAC championship play and a 15-5 record, the best for the program since 2006.

Mary Washington led all schools with two doubles teams and six singles competitors on the all-state teams, while Washington & Lee saw one doubles team and three singles players named. Christopher Newport, Bridgewater, and Virginia Wesleyan were also represented.
