Fredericksburg, Va.-- The #17 University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated CAC rival York 9-0, before defeating Swarthmore 7-2 on Saturday. The wins move the Eagles to 16-4, 4-0 CAC on the year.
In the first match of the day, UMW easily knocked off York, 9-0 winning every match in straight sets. The Eagles tandem of Tyler Carey and Evan Charles picked up an 8-3 win at one doubles, while Andrew Curtis and David Lunding-Johansson won 8-1 at two. Scott Buie and Alex Cragg picked up the other win, 8-2 at three doubles.
Singles saw all six Eagles win in straight sets. Andrew Curtis (one singles) and Brandon Griffin (four singles) both won by a score of 6-0, 6-0. Scott Buie and Alex Cragg each won 6-1, 6-4 at number two and three respectively. Stratton Gilmore was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at five singles, with Alex Blakhin completing the sweep at six singles, 6-0, 6-2.
In the second match against Swarthmore, UMW won all three doubles and four of six singles matchups to earn the victory. Carey and Charles picked up an 8-4 win at number one, while Gilmore and Griffin were 9-7 winners at two doubles. Andrew Curtis and David Lunding-Johansson completed the double sweep with an 8-3 victory at three.
The Eagles won at number one, three, five and six singles to earn the 7-2 win. Carey won 6-2, 6-2 at one singles, with Gilmore picking up a win at three singles; four and three. Lunding-Johansson triumphed at five singles 6-3, 6-0. Brandon Griffin was the other Eagle winner, going 6-4, 6-4 at six singles.
UMW is back on the courts next Saturday, April 12th when they travel to Salisbury. First with the Sea Gulls is set for 1:00 p.m.
